E-E-A-T Signals: What They Are and How to Improve Them

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. Originally introduced by Google as a framework for evaluating content quality, E-E-A-T has become equally relevant for AI citation decisions. AI engines are trained to avoid citing unreliable sources, and E-E-A-T signals are the primary mechanism through which reliability is communicated in machine-readable form. Improving your E-E-A-T profile is one of the highest-leverage AEO investments a brand can make.

Experience signals

Experience refers to first-hand involvement with the topic being discussed. For businesses, experience signals include years of operation (founded date in Organization schema), case studies and customer outcomes described in specific detail, product or service reviews from verified customers, and content that includes real-world examples from direct practice. Content written by someone with demonstrable experience in the field is valued over generic informational writing. Add founding date, number of customers served, and notable case studies to your schema and key pages.

Expertise signals

Expertise refers to formal or practical knowledge about a topic. Expertise signals include: author bylines with credentials and titles on content pages, about pages that describe the qualifications of founders and key staff, certifications and licenses displayed and marked up in schema, educational content that demonstrates deep knowledge of the subject, and references to peer-reviewed research, industry standards, or professional methodologies. Use Person schema for content authors and include their credentials as structured data.

Authoritativeness signals

Authoritativeness refers to recognition by others in the field. This is the hardest E-E-A-T dimension to build quickly because it depends on external validation. Authoritativeness signals include: mentions and citations in industry publications, links and references from authoritative sites in your category, speaker credits at industry events, media coverage, awards and rankings from recognized industry organizations, and association memberships. These signals cannot be added to your site directly; they must be earned through genuine industry participation and then referenced in schema.

Trustworthiness signals

Trustworthiness refers to the reliability and honesty of the site and its content. Trust signals include: HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate, clear and accurate contact information in consistent format, a real physical address for location-based businesses, transparent pricing without hidden fees, privacy policy and terms of service, aggregate review scores from verified third-party platforms (Google Reviews, Trustpilot), and consistent brand identity across all channels. Mark up your aggregate review data using AggregateRating schema.

Making E-E-A-T machine-readable

The challenge with E-E-A-T is that much of it exists in prose and images that AI engines cannot reliably parse. The solution is structured data: add Person schema for all content authors with their job title, affiliation, and credentials. Add Organization schema with founding date, location, and industry category. Add AggregateRating schema for verified reviews. Add Certification or hasCredential properties where relevant. The combination of strong on-site signals and third-party verification is what pushes an E-E-A-T profile from average to excellent.
