FAQ Schema: Why AI Loves Question-and-Answer Content
AI engines exist to answer questions. FAQ content exists to answer questions. The alignment is obvious, and FAQ schema markup is the bridge that makes it explicit. When your site has FAQPage schema correctly implemented, AI engines can extract your questions and answers directly and use them in their responses, often verbatim. This makes FAQ schema one of the fastest AEO wins available to any site that already has question-and-answer content.
Why AI engines prioritize FAQ content
AI engines generate answers by synthesizing content from sources that match the user's query. FAQ content is ideal source material because it is already structured as a question-and-answer pair: the question signals relevance and the answer provides the content the AI engine needs. When that FAQ content also has FAQPage schema markup, the AI engine can extract it programmatically rather than inferring it from prose. The result is that well-structured FAQ pages with proper schema are cited far more frequently than equivalent information buried in paragraphs.
How to implement FAQPage schema
FAQPage schema is a JSON-LD block placed in the head or body of your page. The @type is 'FAQPage' and it contains a 'mainEntity' array. Each element of the array is a Question @type with a 'name' property (the question text) and an 'acceptedAnswer' property containing a Answer @type with a 'text' property (the answer text). The answer text can include HTML markup. Each question-and-answer pair from your page should appear as a separate entry in the mainEntity array.
Writing questions that match AI queries
The questions in your FAQ schema should match the exact phrasing users type into AI engines. Research this using the autocomplete suggestions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google, as well as 'People also ask' boxes in Google results for your primary keywords. Write questions in first person (e.g. 'What should I look for in a personal injury lawyer?') or as direct questions (e.g. 'How long does AEO implementation take?'). Avoid marketing-speak questions ('Why is Brand X the best choice?') that no real user would type into an AI.
The right length and specificity for FAQ answers
FAQ answers for AI citation should be specific, complete, and self-contained. Aim for 50 to 150 words per answer. The answer should make sense without the question context, since AI engines sometimes excerpt just the answer portion. Include specific details: numbers, timelines, prices, and criteria. Avoid answers that are purely promotional or that end with 'contact us for more information.' An answer that gives genuine value is more likely to be cited. Think of each answer as a paragraph that could appear in a Perplexity response and read naturally.
How many FAQs and where to put them
Add FAQ content and FAQPage schema to your most important pages: home, services, product pages, and any page targeting a high-intent query. A minimum of five questions per page is recommended, with ten to twenty for cornerstone content pages. Each FAQ page can have its own set of questions relevant to that specific page's content. Avoid duplicating the same questions across multiple pages; instead, create unique, relevant questions for each page's topic. This creates a network of answer-ready content across your site that AI engines can draw from for different query types.
