How AI Engines Evaluate and Score Websites

AI engines do not rank websites the way Google does. They evaluate them on a different set of criteria, with different weights and different technical requirements. Understanding how AI engines read, score, and decide to cite a website is the first step to improving your brand's presence in AI-generated answers. This guide explains the evaluation framework in practical terms.

Crawlability comes first

Before any content evaluation happens, an AI engine must be able to access your site. This means your robots.txt must permit the AI crawlers relevant to each platform: GPTBot for ChatGPT, ClaudeBot for Claude, PerplexityBot for Perplexity, Google-Extended for Google AI Overviews. If any of these are blocked, the engine cannot read your content regardless of how good it is. Crawlability is a binary filter: pass it and content evaluation begins; fail it and the evaluation ends before it starts.

Structured data as a direct signal

Once an AI engine can access your site, it looks for structured signals that reduce ambiguity. JSON-LD schema markup tells the engine exactly what the page is about, who wrote it, what business it represents, and what questions it answers. A page with Organization schema, FAQPage schema, and Article schema provides a machine-readable summary of its content. A page with no schema requires the engine to infer everything from prose, which introduces uncertainty and reduces citation likelihood. Schema is the clearest and most direct signal of AEO readiness.

Entity matching and confidence

AI engines maintain knowledge graphs: databases of entities (businesses, people, places, products) and their known attributes. When evaluating a website, the engine tries to match it to an entity in its knowledge graph. A high-confidence match increases the likelihood of citation because the engine can draw on its full knowledge of the entity, not just what it found on this one page. High-confidence entity matching requires consistent name, category, location, and description signals across your own site, Google Business Profile, and external directories.

Relevance to the query

Relevance evaluation is where content quality matters. The engine compares the content it found on your site to the specific question the user asked. Sites with FAQ-style content that uses the same language as user queries perform well here. Sites with dense technical prose or marketing copy that never directly answers a question perform poorly. The test is simple: if you read your page and ask whether it directly answers the question 'what is the best [your category] for [user context]', the page that most clearly answers it is the one that gets cited.

Trust and authority signals

The final evaluation dimension is trust. AI engines are trained to avoid citing untrustworthy sources because a bad citation damages user trust in the AI engine itself. Trust signals include: author bylines with credentials on content pages, third-party verification (certifications, awards, press coverage), aggregate review scores from sources like Trustpilot or Google Reviews, consistent positive brand mentions in authoritative publications, and HTTPS with no security warnings. Each of these signals increases the engine's confidence that your brand is a reliable citation.
