Squarespace and AEO: What You Can and Cannot Control

Squarespace is a polished website builder used by a large number of small businesses, creative studios, and professional service providers. Its design quality is excellent, but its AEO flexibility is limited compared to WordPress or custom-built sites. Understanding exactly what Squarespace does and does not support lets you make informed decisions about what to implement and where workarounds are needed.

Squarespace's built-in schema support

Squarespace automatically generates structured data for several content types. Product pages in Squarespace Commerce generate Product schema. Blog posts generate Article schema. Events generate Event schema. Location-based pages generate some LocalBusiness schema fields when you configure your business address in the Squarespace business settings. These defaults are helpful but incomplete: they do not include AggregateRating, FAQPage schema, or complete Organization schema with all the fields AI engines look for.

Injecting custom schema into Squarespace

Squarespace allows custom code injection in two ways: page-specific code blocks via the Advanced settings panel on each page, and sitewide code injection via Settings, Advanced, Code Injection. For Organization schema that should appear on every page, use the Header section of the sitewide Code Injection and add the JSON-LD script tag there. For FAQPage schema on specific pages, add a Code Block to that page's content and insert the schema there. This method works on Business and Commerce plans. Personal plan Squarespace accounts do not have access to code injection.

Robots.txt limitations on Squarespace

Squarespace does not allow direct editing of your robots.txt file. The platform controls the robots.txt content and it generally allows all major crawlers by default. Check your robots.txt at yourdomain.com/robots.txt to confirm. If you find any unexpected blocks, you cannot directly edit the file on Squarespace: your options are to contact Squarespace support or to ensure your Squarespace site settings are not set to discourage crawling, which affects the robots.txt output. The inability to precisely control robots.txt is one of Squarespace's key AEO limitations.

Adding llms.txt on Squarespace

Squarespace does not support serving arbitrary files at the domain root, so yourdomain.com/llms.txt is not directly achievable. The best alternative is to create a Squarespace page at a path like /llms-txt with your llms.txt content formatted as plain text in a text block. Link to this page from your footer and in your sitewide code injection as a meta tag or comment so crawlers can find it. Some Squarespace users also host the llms.txt file on a separate static service and use a Squarespace URL redirect to point /llms.txt to it.

Where Squarespace excels for AEO

Squarespace's fast load times, HTTPS by default, clean HTML output, and reliable uptime are genuine AEO advantages. Page speed and accessibility are signals AI engines consider, and Squarespace sites typically score well on both. The platform's clean URL structure, proper heading hierarchy, and image optimization also contribute positively. For businesses on Squarespace that cannot migrate to a more flexible platform, focusing on content quality, FAQ pages with injected schema, complete Google Business Profile optimization, and entity consistency across directories is the highest-leverage path to AI visibility.
