AEO for Wix Websites: How to Improve AI Visibility
Wix is a popular website builder that handles many technical decisions automatically, which is helpful for non-technical users but creates constraints for AEO implementation. The platform generates some structured data by default and allows some customization, but certain AEO signals require workarounds or are simply unavailable on Wix. This guide covers what is possible and how to maximize AI visibility within those limits.
What Wix handles automatically
Wix generates basic structured data for certain content types including blog posts (Article schema), events (Event schema), and products in Wix Stores (Product schema). It also generates a robots.txt that allows major search crawlers. Wix sites are HTTPS by default and load reasonably fast on their infrastructure. For basic local business schema, Wix offers a 'Business Info' settings panel that populates some LocalBusiness schema fields automatically. These defaults give Wix sites a starting point, but they leave significant AEO gaps compared to more flexible platforms.
Adding custom schema to Wix
Wix allows you to add custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript through the Wix Editor's Embed Code feature. You can inject a JSON-LD schema block into any page using an HTML component. Place it in the page body rather than a visible area (set it to be invisible). For Organization schema that should appear on every page, add it through the Wix Editor's site-level custom code section under Settings, Custom Code, and then Add Custom Code. This method lets you add schema types that Wix does not generate natively, including FAQPage and complete Organization schema.
Robots.txt on Wix
Wix does not allow direct editing of the robots.txt file. Wix generates its own robots.txt automatically and the contents are largely determined by your site's publication settings and SEO preferences in the Wix dashboard. By default, Wix's robots.txt allows major crawlers. Check your Wix robots.txt by visiting yourdomain.com/robots.txt and looking for any Disallow rules that might affect AI crawlers. If you see broad blocks, contact Wix support or adjust your Wix SEO settings, as direct robots.txt editing is not available on standard Wix plans.
llms.txt workarounds for Wix
Wix does not support serving a file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. The closest workaround is to create a Wix page with the path /llms-txt and add your llms.txt content as plain text. This is not an exact substitute because AI crawlers expect the file at the standard path, but some crawlers follow redirects. Another approach is to summarize your brand in a dedicated 'About Our Brand' page that is clearly linked from your homepage, making it easy for AI crawlers to find a condensed brand description even without a formal llms.txt file.
Maximizing content for AI citation on Wix
Given Wix's technical limitations, content quality becomes even more important. Create a dedicated FAQ page using Wix's built-in accordion or FAQ app, and add custom FAQPage JSON-LD schema via the embed code method described above. Write ten to fifteen specific questions and answers matching the queries your target customers ask AI engines. Ensure your Google Business Profile is fully optimized and consistent with your Wix site information: for local businesses especially, Google Business Profile data is a primary AI engine source that bypasses Wix's platform limitations entirely.
