Our goal through Akiya Collective is to purchase and revitalize these 空き家 ("akiyas", empty homes) into art installations, residencies, and other creative community spaces for people to gather.Akiya Collective also operates a social R&D lab: architecting experiments for changing collective behavior, preserving public goods, and developing new community infrastructure for the 21st century.We are actively supporting a network of home-owners in acquiring, renovating, and operating properties in Japan. In 2024, we purchased our first property in Komoro Town, Nagano Prefecture, and began transforming it into a community makerspace. Over the course of the year, we worked with 100+ volunteers (chefs, musicians, carpenters, and founders) to clear decades of clutter, revive the home's original architecture, and build a space for creativity and connection. From large-scale art installations and woodworking experiments to artist residencies and emergent community rituals, Komoro became the birthplace of our vision for Akiya Collective.
