What is the KP index?

The KP index measures geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 to 9. Higher values mean stronger aurora activity and visibility at lower latitudes. A KP of 2-3 is enough to see aurora in the Arctic, while KP 5+ can bring aurora to mid-latitudes.

When is the best time to see the northern lights?

The aurora season runs from September to March in the Northern Hemisphere. The best months are typically September-October and February-March, coinciding with the equinoxes when geomagnetic activity tends to peak.

How do the 40-minute alerts work?

We monitor real-time solar wind data from NASA's ACE spacecraft. When we detect conditions that will cause aurora, we calculate the arrival time and send you an alert approximately 40 minutes before the aurora becomes visible.

What's the difference between Aurora Now and Aurora Alert?

Both apps have identical features. Aurora Now is a one-time purchase for lifetime access, ideal for enthusiasts and locals. Aurora Alert is a subscription model (weekly/monthly), perfect for travelers who only need the app during their trip.

Do I need internet to use the app?

An internet connection is required to receive real-time alerts and updated forecasts. However, you can view cached forecast data offline. The app uses minimal data and works well even on slow connections.

Is the app available worldwide?

Yes! Aurora Now works globally. While the northern lights are only visible at high latitudes, our app provides forecasts for locations worldwide and will alert you whenever aurora might be visible from your location.
