Origin of the Name

What is a Moon Rabbit you ask?As a Chinese/Taiwanese American, I grew up with several folk tales. The Moon Rabbit or Jade Rabbit originates from the mythology of Chang’e (嫦娥), the moon goddess. In ancient times, the Earth had 10 suns which scorched the ground and there was never a night sky. A very skilled archer named, Hou Yi (后羿) shot down 9 of the suns and as a reward for his heroic deed, he received the Elixir of Immortality but only enough for one person. Hou Yi did not want to live forever without his wife, Chang’e so he hid the elixir. The story has different versions, some say Chang’e took the elixir because Hou Yi’s apprentice was trying to steal it and others say she stole the elixir. Either way, she ingests the elixir and floats up to the moon.Hou Yi misses his wife over time and looks at the moon wondering if she is lonely up there. He places fruits and desserts as offerings to her.In modern times, Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節) continues to celebrate offering delights to Chang’e for her blessing. It is when mooncakes are gifted. And the rabbit? In some varitations of the tale, Chang’e has a companion rabbit who lives on the moon with her and continues to make the Elixir of Immortality for the gods.I chose the name to continue to honor my heritage. And while, don’t purport to sell an elixir that will bestow forever life, I do believe the work we do together will open doors to a change in your life.
