Moving continents with my family in my mid-40's, the stress of navigating living in a different society and finding my way in this new place, resulted in some health struggles... I'm originally from South Africa where I trained and practiced as a Pharmacist. Our family emigrated to the USA in 1998. I then spent an additional 2.5 years becoming re-licensed as a Pharmacist in the USA and worked in Retail Pharmacy for 18 years before I retired. I served many diabetic patients, answering their questions on their medications, diet, exercise and blood glucose testing. Working in Healthcare I became increasingly aware of the health crisis in the USA (especially the rise in Type 2 Diabetes and obesity), and that pharmaceuticals alone could not stem the rise of these chronic disease states. Patients diagnosed with a chronic disease, or especially Diabetes, are very often on the slippery slope of worsening health, with little to no effective support or guidance regarding their lifestyle or diet. My growing frustration propelled me in my search for a better way to address this healthcare scenario. I consequently completed the coursework in Functional Medicine Health Coaching through the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy (FMCA), and subsequent Board certification. At that time, I suffered increasingly from frequent headaches, inflammation, arthritic pain, irritable bowel, anxiety, terrible brain fog, weight gain and physical and mental exhaustion. Along the way, I discovered I had a gluten sensitivity which may have originally precipitated a autoimmune disease. All of this has resulted in a decades-long personal journey to better health. I am glad to say that my health and wellbeing have improved greatly. I am very keen to help others regain their lost vitality, through my sharing what I have learned. My vocation in Pharmacy together with my Board certification as a Functional Medicine Health Coach, have equipped me well to facilitate positive health changes in others through My Vitality Regained LLC. Also, during the past few years my husband (Type 1 diabetic) and I have run a Diabetes Support Group for both Type 1's and Type 2's, called "SweetSpot". We aim to educate, encourage and support the members as they seek to improve their health. My goal is to help those struggling with prediabetes and T2-Diabetes, to experience relief, increased understanding of how Diabetes / Insulin Resistance affects your body and regaining your vitality... reaching your best health possible. You can do this knowing you're not alone in your struggle!
