June 17 2025 (update 2): Trans Legal Project condemns the recent UK Supreme Court ruling in the FWS appeal case. We profoundly disagree with the Court's conclusions and we are very disturbed by the process through which the Court travelled to reach them (including rejecting any attempt by members of the trans community to speak). We further condemn attempts by the UK media and political establishment to utilise this ruling to institute blanket bans of trans people from facilities in the UK that match their lived gender. The Supreme Court ruling does not require this and nor did it suggest it as a viable way forward. The Equality and Human Rights Commission's role in this frenzy we see as reprehensible, with its anti-trans public statements, its rush to produce a legally meaningless 'interim update' (encouraging service providers to treat it as authoritative), and its subsequent production of a new draft Statutory Code for The Equality Act 2010, which eliminates many of the trans community's human rights. We are very shocked by the attempts we are now seeing to destroy 20+ years of settled law that has protected trans people in the UK plus 50 or more years of established public policy, using the Court's ruling as a veil. Trans people are not and never have been what the noxious British media or opportunistic politicians have tried to make us into. We deserved better from the judicial system than we received on April 16th 2025 - far better.
