Is University of the People an accredited university?

Yes. In February 2014 UoPeople received accreditation from the Distance Education Accrediting Commission. The Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a recognized accrediting agency. The Distance Education Accrediting Commission is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Will a UoPeople degree be accepted by other Universities or potential employers?

Our accreditation is a clear indication of the academic excellence and rigorous standards of UoPeople. That being said, we can't guarantee that our degrees or credits will be accepted by other international academic institutions or employers, since this is determined by each institution individually. It's simple! Just click “Apply Now” at the top of the page and complete the quick online application form. Once you submit, you'll receive an email with instructions on how to log in, confirm your details, and complete the application process in the UoPeople Portal. Why are there fees if you are tuition-free?

Our mission to provide affordable, tuition-free education for everybody. University of the People is tuition-free, which means there is no charge for teaching or instruction. To help support our continued operation, UoPeople charges a $60 application fee, and an Assessment Fee per course completed ($120 for the undergraduate programs, $200 for certificate programs, and $300 for the graduate programs). No annual enrollment fees, and no cost for course material. If you can't afford even these fees, scholarships are available.

What are the costs for books, material fees, etc.?

University of the People does not charge students to take classes, for any reading or study materials, or for annual enrollment. We use open educational resources to provide readings to students at no cost, and offer access to library resources through the Library Information and Resources Network (LIRN) and JSTOR available to students for free.
