Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is a related term to AEO, coined by researchers at Princeton and Georgia Tech in 2023. GEO focuses specifically on optimizing content to appear in outputs from generative AI systems (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Gemini, with particular attention to the signals that influence which sources get cited and in what positions.

Why it matters for AEO

GEO research found that certain content signals dramatically increase citation rates: adding statistics with citations, quoting authoritative sources, using fluent and authoritative language, and including concrete technical details. Brands that apply GEO principles to their content see measurable increases in AI citation rates within weeks.

How to implement

Apply GEO signals to your highest-priority content: include specific statistics with source citations, use clear and authoritative language (not vague marketing copy), provide concrete examples and case studies, structure content with clear H2/H3 headings, add author credentials inline. For product pages, include specific technical specifications. For service pages, include concrete outcomes with numbers.
