AI Overviews

AI Overviews (previously Search Generative Experience or SGE) is Google's feature that generates a synthesized AI answer at the top of search results for eligible queries. It is powered by Google's Gemini model and draws on crawled web content, structured data, and Google's Knowledge Graph to produce cited summaries.

Why it matters for AEO

AI Overviews appear for an estimated 10-40% of all Google queries (varying by query type and user). When your brand or content appears in an AI Overview, it receives a premium placement above all organic results - but only 3-5 sources are typically cited. Brands with strong E-E-A-T signals and well-structured content earn AI Overview placements far more often.

How to implement

Optimize for AI Overviews by: writing content that directly answers specific questions (not just targeting keywords); using clear H2/H3 structure with each heading posing a question; adding FAQPage schema; maintaining strong E-E-A-T signals; earning links from authoritative sites. Google's Google-Extended crawler must be allowed in robots.txt for eligibility.
