The Three Questions Every AI Engine Asks About Your Site

We have spent this month publishing measurements: 14 million sites deep-read, a median score of 4 out of 10, thousands of businesses read by AI and never named. Behind all of it sits one simple mechanism that deserves its own piece. When an AI engine reads a business website, it is trying to answer three questions. Who is this business? What does it offer? Where does it operate? Everything else, all the markup and metadata and optimization advice, is in service of those three.

Engagemii graphic: the three questions every AI engine asks about a website - who is this business, what does it offer, where does it operate.

The whole game in three questions. A machine that can answer them can use you in an answer. Source: Engagemii, July 2026.

Question one: who is this business?

The most common failure is the most basic: the business name never appears as text a machine can read. It lives in a logo image, and to a crawler an unlabeled image is a rectangle of nothing. The fix costs nothing: your business name in real text, in the page title, in a heading, in the footer. If a machine cannot confidently say your name, nothing downstream can go right.

Question two: what does it offer?

Humans infer. A machine reading a page full of mood and adjectives, Crafted with passion, Excellence in every detail, learns nothing it can repeat in an answer. The test is brutal and useful: is there one plain sentence on your homepage that says what you sell, to whom? We deep-read 14 million sites, and the absence of that sentence is the single most common reason otherwise healthy businesses score poorly. Beautiful sites fail it constantly.

Question three: where does it operate?

For any business where geography matters, the engine needs a parseable location: a real address in text, not coordinates locked inside a map widget. When someone asks an assistant for options near them, the engines can only include businesses whose location they actually hold. An address in plain text on your site is the difference between existing and not existing for every local question.

Answer all three and the compounding starts

A site that answers the three questions cleanly gets extracted correctly, which makes it usable in answers, which is the doorway everything else walks through. Structured data helps, schema markup helps, but they are amplifiers of clear content, not substitutes for it. The machines keep what they can understand. Make yourself easy to understand and every other investment starts paying.

Score yourself on all three

Our free score reads your site the way the engines do and grades exactly this: what a machine can extract about who you are, what you offer, and where you operate, with the fixes ranked by impact. Free at engagemii.com/aeo.
