Every business wants AI engines to read it. So what actually draws the crawlers in? Opinions are everywhere; measurements are rare. We are in a position to measure: we log AI crawler reads across millions of business pages, and we hold a deep profile on every business in our 14 million-strong US directory. So we ran the comparison properly, 30,000 businesses the crawlers read against 30,000 they skipped, matched on industry and site age so we compare like with like.

Domain trust, the accumulated authority of a domain across the web's link graph, is the strongest single signal we found: businesses in the read group were about 2.1 times more likely to have strong domain trust than matched skipped businesses. An active Reddit presence follows at about 1.5 times, a mobile app at about 1.4, a real backlink footprint at about 1.3, and news mentions at about 1.2.
Notice what those have in common: none of them live on the website itself. They are the business's footprint, the shadow it casts across the rest of the internet. The crawl decision looks a lot like a reputation check: the engines spend their reading budget on businesses the web already vouches for.
This data completes a picture we have been assembling all month. Getting visited is battle one, and it is fought off your site: authority, community, mentions, the places your name appears. Being understood is battle two, and it is fought on your pages: whether a machine can extract who you are, what you sell, and where you operate. Our deep read of 14 million sites showed most businesses losing battle two with a median score of 4 out of 10. Today's data shows what decides battle one.
You need both. A strong footprint with an illegible site gets read and misunderstood. A crystal-clear site with no footprint waits longer for the reading to happen. The businesses AI talks about are the ones that win twice.
These are correlations from observational data, matched on industry and site age but not a controlled experiment. A mobile app or a Reddit presence is partly a marker of the kind of business that does many things right, though the signals held inside narrow authority bands, which is what makes them worth reporting. And this measures crawler attention, not answer mentions: a different, earlier stage of the pipeline than who gets named.
