All month we have covered the two battles a business fights with AI: getting read by the crawlers, and being understood once it is. This is the question underneath both of them: who actually gets named in the answer? So we checked real citations across the AI answer engines, 1,606 of them, and matched every cited company back to its AI visibility score.

Companies scoring 6+ on AI visibility are about 8x more represented in real AI citations, and 72% of those cited are mid-sized, not giants. Source: Engagemii, July 2026.
63% of the companies AI cited scored 6 or higher on our 0-10 scale, versus 8% of businesses overall. At 7 or higher it is 21% versus 1%. A strong score does not guarantee a citation, but the companies getting named are overwhelmingly the ones that score well.
That is the payoff of the two battles we have been writing about. Getting read is fought off your site, on authority and footprint. Being understood is fought on your pages, on structure and clarity. The score rolls both together, and it lines up with who actually gets named.
Only 7% of the cited companies are household giants. 72% are mid-sized businesses, and they carry a strong on-page score, averaging 6.5 out of 10. They did not get named because everyone already knows them. They got named because their pages were built for a machine to read.
This is the hopeful part. If AI only ever cited the biggest brands, there would be nothing to do but wait to get famous. Instead, most citations go to companies that earned them with work anyone can do: a site a machine can actually parse, and a footprint that gives an engine a reason to trust it.
These are correlations, not a controlled experiment. The set of cited companies skews toward names already known in their category, and being named on one set of questions is not the same as being named on all of them. What the numbers establish is simpler: the businesses AI cites are, overwhelmingly, the ones that score well, and most of them are not giants.
