Google AI Overviews: How to Get Featured

Google AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience) are AI-generated answer summaries that appear at the top of many Google search results pages, above traditional organic rankings. They cite specific sources and can dramatically increase brand visibility for the sites that are included. Getting featured in Google AI Overviews requires a combination of traditional SEO strength and AEO-specific technical signals.

How Google AI Overviews work

Google AI Overviews are generated by Google's Gemini AI model, which synthesizes content from across the web to create a direct answer to the user's query. The sources cited in AI Overviews are selected from the pages Google considers most relevant and authoritative for the query, drawing on the same signals as traditional search ranking but with additional emphasis on content structure and answer clarity. AI Overviews appear for a significant and growing share of search queries, particularly for how-to, comparison, and informational intent queries.

Allowing Google-Extended

Google-Extended is the crawler used specifically for AI features including AI Overviews. It is separate from Googlebot and can be blocked independently. Many sites block Google-Extended without realizing they are opting out of AI Overviews consideration while maintaining their standard search rankings. Check your robots.txt for any rule that blocks Google-Extended and remove it if you want to be eligible for AI Overviews. Note that blocking Google-Extended does not affect your traditional search rankings.

Schema that improves AI Overviews inclusion

Google AI Overviews strongly favor content with FAQPage schema, HowTo schema, and Article schema. FAQPage schema is particularly powerful because it provides Google's AI model with pre-structured question-and-answer pairs that can be directly incorporated into Overview responses. Sites with comprehensive FAQPage schema on key pages are cited in AI Overviews far more frequently than equivalent sites without schema. Add FAQPage schema to every page that contains question-and-answer content.

Content quality signals for AI Overviews

Google's AI Overviews apply the same content quality standards as its core search quality algorithms, meaning E-E-A-T signals matter significantly. Content attributed to credible authors with credentials, content that cites primary sources and data, and content that directly and specifically answers the query performs best. Avoid thin content, content that is primarily promotional, and content that hedges answers with vague qualifications. Google AI Overviews cite the sources that give users the most useful, specific, and trustworthy answer.

Monitoring AI Overview appearances

Search Google for queries relevant to your business and look for the AI Overview section at the top of results. Note whether your site is cited and compare the content of the cited page against your own pages targeting that query. Google Search Console does not currently provide dedicated AI Overview impressions data, but you can track organic click-through rates and note changes after implementing AEO fixes. An AEO audit at /aeo/scores evaluates all the signals that influence AI Overview inclusion.
