Earlier this month we checked 1,606 real AI citations and found that businesses scoring 6 or higher were about 8 times more likely to be named. Since then the experiment kept running. We are now at 17,800 real answers to real buying questions - best CRM for a small firm, best pillow, best payroll service - across ChatGPT-class engines, with every cited business matched back to its full profile. Eleven times the data sharpened the picture.

When we rank every signal we measure by how well it predicts real citations, the top of the list is all off-page: how much the web talks about you. Community discussion, press mentions, the trust your domain has earned, who links to you. On-page structure still matters - it decides whether an engine can read you at all - but between two readable sites, the one the web vouches for gets named.
Think of it as two doors. Structure gets you through the first door: the engine can find you, parse you, understand what you sell. Authority gets you through the second: the engine has a reason to pick you out of everyone else it understood. Most advice stops at door one. The citations live behind door two.
Because we log the sources behind each answer, we can see what the engines lean on while deciding who to name: review platforms, industry directories, comparison articles, trade press. If your business has real presence on the surfaces AI reads while forming an answer, you are in the room when the decision happens. If your only footprint is your own website, you are asking the engine to take your word for it.
The playbook writes itself, and none of it requires fame. Get your site machine-readable first - schema, llms.txt, a robots file that lets AI crawlers in - because nothing else matters if the engine cannot read you. Then build the footprint: claim and fill out the review platforms and directories your industry actually uses, earn a few pieces of trade press, be present where your customers already discuss businesses like yours. Authority compounds; every mention is a vote an engine can count.
Same caveat as always: these are correlations measured at scale, not a controlled experiment. But 17,800 answers is enough volume that the ordering of what predicts citations is stable, and it has not moved as the data grew: authority first, structure as the ticket in.
