Which AI Is Actually Reading Your Website? We Counted 18.9 Million Crawler Visits.

We count every AI crawler visit at the server, across one of the larger networks of business pages on the web, matched against reverse-checked bot signatures so a bot cannot pretend to be something it is not. The counter is now past 18.9 million AI visits. When we break that number down by which AI did the reading, the result surprises almost everyone: the crawler most businesses worry about, ChatGPT's, is not the one doing the work.

Engagemii chart: of 18.9 million verified AI crawler visits, ClaudeBot accounts for about 70 percent, Applebot about 18 percent, and GPTBot about 10 percent - Claude reads roughly seven times more than ChatGPT's crawler and Apple's crawler out-reads OpenAI's.

Claude reads the web, by a lot

ClaudeBot alone accounts for more than 13 million of those visits - about 70% of all AI crawling we see, and roughly seven reads for every single one from GPTBot. Anthropic's crawler is not sampling the web. It is systematically working through it.

That reframes the whole conversation. The question is rarely whether AI has read your site - it almost certainly has, and it was probably Claude. The question is what it understood when it did.

Apple reads more than OpenAI

Applebot is second at about 3.4 million visits, nearly 18% of the total and close to double GPTBot's 1.9 million. The crawler feeding Siri and Apple Intelligence is a heavier reader of business websites than ChatGPT's is, and almost nobody is optimizing for it.

GPTBot is real and worth serving - it is still nearly two million visits. But it is a distant third. A business that builds its entire AI strategy around ChatGPT is preparing for the smallest of the three readers actually showing up.

What this means for you

The good news is that you do not optimize per bot. Claude, Apple, and OpenAI's crawlers all read the same signals: an open robots.txt that lets AI crawlers in, structured data they can parse, an llms.txt that tells them what you are. Get those right and you are readable to all of them at once. Get them wrong - block AI crawlers, ship no schema - and you are invisible to the 13-million-visit reader, not just the two-million one.

The honest limits

This is the crawler mix across our network, and the exact split on any single site will vary with its age, links, and platform. And a visit is not a citation - being read is step one, being understood and then named is the rest. What the count settles is narrower and useful: the AI reading your site the most is very likely not the one you have been picturing.
