Orientation – Is the DTI facing the right way?

For nut-side installations, make sure your stack-up looks like this: Bolt through hole; Squirter® DTI (bumps facing away from the steel); Hardened flat washer; Nut. Why it matters: If the bumps face the steel, they’ll dig into it instead of compressing. That stops the DTI from doing its job, and you won’t get a proper indication.

Hole Size – Are you using standard holes?

Squirter® DTIs are designed for standard holes. If you’re dealing with oversized or short-slotted holes, you need to support the DTI properly: Bolt through hole; Hardened flat washer (to span the oversize or slot); Squirter® DTI (bumps out); Hardened flat washer; Nut. Why it matters: Without support, the DTI bumps can fall into the hole and won’t compress like they should.

Wrench Power – Is your tool up to the job?

A weak wrench won’t crush the DTI bumps. Here’s what’s required: Impact wrench with ½” to 1-¼” bolts: DTI should fire within 10 seconds; Impact wrench with 1-3/8″ to 1-½” bolts: DTI should fire within 15 seconds; Continuous-turn wrenches: No time limit, but the wrench must tension the bolt fully without stalling.

Hardware Condition – Is it clean or corroded?

Rust or corrosion increases friction, making tensioning harder. More friction means more torque and a higher risk of stalling or breaking bolts. Best practice: Use clean, as-delivered hardware. If that’s not possible, requalify using Stickwax or Molylube on the bolt threads and nut washer face.

Painted Steel – Is the coating too thick or uncured?

If the steel is heavily painted or the coating has not cured, the DTI channels can clog. Fix it: Add an extra hardened flat washer under the DTI to separate it from the paint and restore a clear indication.
