BEYOND DEFEAT

WHERE BROOKLYN AT?

Brooklyn comes hard with the party vibes. They always have. Once you clear the highway and wind onto Fourth Avenue, you can fall into a steady rhythm for the next 5-6 miles as you cruise along the mostly straight route. We were rocking a 6:55-7:00 pace and I felt good, not particularly speedy, but smooth. I didn’t have to pee, so that alone was a major win.

IS THIS THING ON?

The thing about running is that without a plan, you’re just running to run…there’s no structure to anything. When I’m running without an assignment I’m like a rogue operative operating aimlessly… but if you assign me to a mission, I get very focused and competitive. A team I occasionally run with had an available slot, so I took it. And from then on, I was activated.

POST BOSTON TRAINING?

My legs were SHREDDED after the Boston Marathon. I didn’t run for 1-2 weeks after and when I did start up again, it was only for 3-4 easy miles at a time. I did run the last 9 miles of the course twice. Once was with BW, and the second time it was a week prior to the race. I met up with the Friday crew, all of whom were slated to run NYCM. I felt rested and healed, but it was anyone’s guess on what would happen on

What’s a virtual race?

Using GPS tracking… Garmin watch, Apple watch, iPhone, etc. you record your race and then submit it through the proper channels. You are given a window in which you need to complete the race in order for it to count. The honor system also plays a very large role in a virtual race.

Celebration?

COVID post race parties aren’t a thing really, so the afterparty situation just doesn’t happen. I did however, take my book and go to my local pub Third Ave Alehouse for some lunch and a few drinks. My friend Myles alerted me that he was out as well doing ‘to go’ socially distanced drinks in the hood, so I met him for a few after.
