Which animal is it, and how do you tell?

The inspection settles that before we set a trap, because the method depends on the species and so does the law. Time of day, the weight and rhythm of what you are hearing, the shape of the droppings, and where the entry point sits are usually enough to name the animal on a first visit. We use live trapping and one-way exclusion devices rather than poison. Poison kills the animal inside the structure, which leaves you with an odor problem and the same open gap for the next animal.
