Who is Duena Blomstrom?

Duena Blomstrom is an author, researcher, and systems thinker focused on human risk, psychological safety, and human-in-the-loop AI. Her work introduced the Human Debt™ framework and later the Empathy Architecture™ model to explain why organizations and AI initiatives fail when human systems are ignored.

What is Human Debt™?

Human Debt™ is the organisational friction that accumulates when teams cannot operate with trust, psychological safety and clear decision processes. When people feel unable to raise concerns, challenge decisions or share problems early, information becomes distorted and coordination slows down. Over time this friction reduces an organisation's ability to execute change. Human Debt™ slows organisations in the same way Technical Debt slows technology systems.

What is Human Work?

Human Work is the behavioural work required to maintain the conditions that allow organisations to collaborate and solve problems effectively. It includes practices such as psychological safety in teams, constructive disagreement, transparent decision-making, clear accountability, and early problem escalation. Where Human Work is strong, Human Debt™ remains low and organisations are able to adapt more quickly.

What is Execution Debt?

Execution Debt is the delivery risk that emerges when Human Debt™ and Technical Debt reinforce each other. When both types of debt accumulate, organisations often know what needs to be done but struggle to deliver it. Typical symptoms include stalled transformation initiatives, slow decision cycles, coordination failures between teams, and difficulty adopting new technologies.

Why do many transformation and AI initiatives fail?

Many transformation programmes focus primarily on technology or process change. However, organisational execution depends on both technical systems and human systems. When Human Debt™ is high, organisations struggle to coordinate, experiment and learn quickly. This slows the adoption of new capabilities, including artificial intelligence. Successful transformation therefore requires addressing both Technical Debt and Human Debt™ while strengthening Human Work across teams and leadership.

What is Empathy Architecture™?

Empathy Architecture™ is a systems design discipline for embedding human cognition, emotion, and safety into organizations, technology, and AI systems. It defines how humans remain meaningfully in the loop as automation and AI scale, ensuring technology amplifies human judgment rather than bypassing it.

What is Adoption Performance?

Adoption Performance describes an organisation's ability to successfully implement new capabilities and embed them into everyday operations. It reflects whether change initiatives actually translate into improved performance. When Execution Debt is low, organisations are able to adopt new capabilities faster and more consistently.

Who created Human Debt™?

The concept of Human Debt™ was developed by Duena Blomstrom as part of the Human Machine Intelligence framework. It was first introduced in People Before Tech (2020) and has since expanded into a complete organisational diagnostic system.
