Do you take insurance?

No, Functional Autism is a cash-pay practice. This allows us to offer longer visits, personalized care, and a holistic approach that insurance typically does not cover. HSA/FSA is accepted, and patients may still use insurance for medications, labs, or imaging as an out-of-network provider.

Will insurance cover my child's prescription medications?

Insurance may cover the cost of some prescription medications such as leucovorin. However, Functional Autism does not contract with insurance companies, so please check with your insurance provider if you have questions. Dr. April can also help guide you through affordable cash options for medications.

Will you replace my child's pediatrician?

No. Functional Autism provides functional healthcare that complements your child's existing medical care. We encourage you to keep your pediatrician and specialists for ongoing medical management while we help bridge gaps and explore functional medicine options.

Does my child need to be present for visits?

Yes. Your child must be present and physically located in one of our licensed states (AZ, CO, CT, FL, ID, NM, OR, UT, VT, or WA) at the time of the telehealth appointment.

Do I need labs before starting leucovorin?

Testing is not required to start leucovorin, but FRAT, MTHFR, homocysteine, and folate/B12 labs can help personalize treatment and identify children most likely to respond.

What is leucovorin (folinic acid) and why is it used for autism?

Leucovorin, also known as folinic acid, is an activated form of folate (a B vitamin) that supports brain development, neurotransmitter production, methylation, and cellular repair. It can bypass metabolic bottlenecks such as Folate Receptor Alpha Autoantibodies (FRAA) and MTHFR-related folate pathway issues. Use in autism is currently off-label; the FDA initiated a label update process for cerebral folate deficiency in September 2025.
