No, HoverSpeak is a completely free extension; no payment of any kind is needed to use it. There are no subscriptions, premium voices, usage limitations, or even the need to register. In fact, if you encounter a version of HoverSpeak that requires payment, please report it to us.

How can you offer HoverSpeak for free?

HoverSpeak is a project created with love for the dyslexic community. Its aim is to provide anyone with a reading difficulty especially those with dyslexia access to a free and powerful text-to-speech tool. HoverSpeak is supported by three types of contributors: individuals making personal donations (here), companies (here), and organizations focused on reading disabilities (here).

What's the difference between cloud voices and local voices?

Modern browsers like Chrome and Edge come with built-in voices. Those are the voices you usually hear when you ask Chrome to read some text, for example, on Google Translate. These voices are provided and generated by Google or Microsoft, respectively. Local voices do not require cloud infrastructure to be generated. They are synthesized locally on your device and usually respond much faster than a cloud voice.
