AI Visibility Scorecard
humanneedsindex.org · Education
Borderline visible. AI bots can crawl Human Needs Index, but the structured-data signals are thin - you are at real risk of being skipped when buyers ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity for a recommendation.

"It provides an analysis of The Salvation Army’s rich, enduring, and consistent collection of service data to expand the pathways through which individuals and communities in poverty may be." That is how Human Needs Index introduces itself. When AI engines look at it, they find little to work with. It scores 3.2 out of 10.
On its own pages the site does well on a clear heading structure, visible credibility markers and sitemaps and entity links AI can follow. What holds it back is a clearly stated business identity, the technical files AI engines look for, such as llms.txt or an open robots.txt and structured data describing the business.
Off the page, other sites link to it. There is some, but not much, sign that the domain is only lightly established. Beyond that, AI engines do not yet recognise it as a distinct business, there is no press coverage to draw on, nobody is discussing it where AI engines look and it does not come up on Reddit. None of that can be fixed on the page: it has to be earned.
AI crawlers have visited once in our tracking, including ClaudeBot (Anthropic). It does link out to several social profiles, which helps engines tie the brand together.

Your AEO score measures whether AI search engines - ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini - can actually read your site and cite it in answers. Roughly two-thirds of sites are invisible to them. At 3.2/10, Human Needs Index is crawlable but under-signaled - fixable, and the signals above are where to start.
How is the HNI used?
The HNI offers a critical new tool for policy makers, social services providers, and researchers to more quickly and accurately understand trends in need.
Why does the HNI use data from The Salvation Army?
The Salvation Army operates more than 7,500 centers in communities across the U.S. and collects high-quality data on a wide variety of poverty-related social services it provides. It is unique in its geographic reach and comprehensive coverage of basic human needs.
How were the data collected?
Each Salvation Army center across the U.S. collects data related to the services it provides within that community.
Does the HNI measure need in my community?
The HNI is a measurement of need based on the services provided by local branches of The Salvation Army. However, there are greater discrepancies between services provided and the actual level of need in a given community than at higher levels of aggregation; therefore, the greatest level of geographical detail the HNI can reliably measure is at the state level.
How do I read or interpret an index?
Comparing the values of the Human Needs Index is relatively simple. The scale begins at 0 – this indicates a minimum level of need. When comparing state values, the values can be compared either across states or across time.
