Our organisation has been formed to fight the growing road safety issue of blinding lights which diminish a driver's ability to perceive hazards putting more vulnerable less conspicuous road users at risk and blinding oncoming drivers. It is a tragedy, that the exponentially declining rate of fatalities in the UK and EU has been broken since blinding lights were mandated in 2011. We have taken the UK Government to task calling for a simple bulb change but they refuse to act - see letters to and from Transport Ministers on our News page Touch screens were introduced about the same time and may be equally to blame. (see Touchscreen dashboards have finally taken over and ruined driving Telegraph James Foxall) Thousands of vehicle designers, road safety officers and highway engineers are continually working across the world to increase road safety, yet fatalities have risen in the UK and USA and not fallen as expected in the EU. LED lamps have not been certified despite causing retinal eye damage (2) The UK DfT, USA's NHTSA and the EU CARE statistics departments have NO ANSWER why accidents have ceased to decline as expected and are conveniently presenting data to ministers only for the past 5 or 10 years, omitting the 2010/11 deviation. Why are the authorities and motor manufacturers ignoring this tragic problem? The reason is that their "experts" have failed to consult qualified ophthalmological opinion. It is now untenable for them to admit they have made a deadly mistake. On the following pages we document the growing body of:- Expert ophthalmological opinion, Legal opinion and Media coverage saying blinding lights are a danger. Thousands of drivers have complained and signed petitions, our 2015 petition attracted 4683 comments many from doctors. Please consider commenting or signing the current Softlights Foundation Petition (68,341 signatories Jan 2025) A flaw in the assessment of blinding light is that the Authorities tend to look only at night-time statistics conveniently ignoring that headlights are on when it rains (thus skewing vision), low levels of daylight and bright sunlight. The cumulative effect of overbright 1200cd daytime running lights also affects the eye.
