Ram Dass was born Richard Alpert in 1931 and became one of the most influential spiritual teachers of the 20th century. A Harvard psychology professor in the 1960s, he conducted groundbreaking research on consciousness with Timothy Leary before traveling to India, where he met his guru Neem Karoli Baba (Maharajji).
