Why Does Coffee Stain Your Teeth?

Coffee contains compounds called tannins, which are a type of polyphenol. Tannins cause color compounds to stick to your teeth, and because tooth enamel isn't perfectly smooth (it actually has tiny ridges and pits), those color compounds settle into the surface and build up over time. The acidity of coffee also plays a role.

What Makes It Worse?

A few habits can speed up the staining process. Sipping coffee slowly throughout the morning means your teeth are exposed to those tannins for a longer period. Adding sugar can also increase bacteria in your mouth, which may contribute to enamel wear and make staining more noticeable. Not drinking water between sips is another common mistake.

Can You Reverse Coffee Stains?

Surface stains from coffee are mostly cosmetic and can often be addressed with good oral care habits. Regular brushing, professional cleanings, and being mindful of what happens right after you drink coffee all make a difference. That said, brushing immediately after coffee isn't actually recommended. Because coffee is acidic, your enamel is temporarily softened right after drinking it.
