The world’s most effective intelligence officers aren’t action heroes. They’re analysts, strategists, and communicators — and the skills they use every day are far more transferable than you’d think. This is where most articles lose me: they tell you to “be more analytical” without telling you what that means in practice. Here’s a more honest breakdown. Develop a questioning mindset. Intelligence officers question everything by default. Don’t accept things at face value — ask why, how, and what evidence supports it. This sounds obvious. It is remarkably rare in practice. Practice decomposing complex problems.

In many instances, traditional education systems fall short of equipping children with essential life skills such as strategic thinking. Schools focus heavily on core academic subjects like maths, science, and language arts, but they often neglect to teach children how to navigate complex decision-making, anticipate consequences, and formulate well-thought-out plans.

Alongside losing weight and learning to play an instrument, learning an additional language is high on most people’s new year’s resolutions every year.
