The Median AEO Score Across 1.7 Million Sites Is 4. Most Brands Don't Know Theirs.

AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, measures how readable, structured, and citation-ready a website is to AI engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. It is the equivalent for AI search of what SEO has been for traditional search, except the audience is a language model instead of a human searcher and the ranking factors are very different.

We have scored 1.7 million business websites on this measurement. The median score is 4 out of 10. Three-quarters of the sample sits between 3 and 6. Less than 0.5 percent clears a 9. The number of sites we have audited that score perfectly is small enough to fit on one screen.

Why this is the score that matters now

Three years ago, this measurement did not exist. Two years ago, it was an industry curiosity. Today, the brands that rank well on AEO are the brands that AI engines cite when a customer asks a question. The brands that do not are not in the conversation.

ChatGPT had over 400 million weekly users at the most recent reported figures. Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini combine for considerably more. When any of those users asks an AI engine to recommend a business in a category, the answer comes from the small subset of sites the AI engine has classified as readable and credible enough to cite.

A site at AEO score 4, which is the median, is not in that subset. The audit data is consistent on this. The gap between visibility and invisibility happens between score 6 and score 8, and the median site is two to three points below the threshold.

What the score actually measures

AEO is a composite measure across six categories: structured data, content structure, entity clarity, E-E-A-T credibility signals, technical AEO, and AI crawler discoverability. The score is a multi-category average, which means a high score requires solid performance across all six. A site can have excellent content and still score in the 4 to 5 range if the structural signals on the other categories are missing.

Most small business sites sit at 4 to 5 because they were built for a previous generation of web traffic. The site looks fine to a human visitor. The site can be found in Google. The owner has no reason to suspect anything is wrong. But the structural signals AI engines look for are absent or incomplete. The visible product is fine. The machine-readable product is not.

Why most brand owners do not know

The conversation about AEO is overwhelmingly happening between AI infrastructure teams, large agencies, and a handful of vendors. The small business owners and mid-market marketing teams whose sites need the work the most have rarely heard the term. The brand owners we audit are usually surprised to learn that AI engines have a separate ranking system from Google and that their site is being measured against it without their participation.

By the time the gap shows up in revenue, it is hard to attribute. A customer who would have walked in based on a Google search but did not because ChatGPT recommended a competitor instead is not a customer the brand owner knows about. They never see the missed handoff. The decline shows up months later as a soft revenue line and the cause is invisible.

What to do if you do not know your score

The first step is finding out. The free AEO audit at engagemii.com/aeo will produce a score for any business website in about 90 seconds. The audit covers all six categories and tells you where on the 0-to-10 scale you sit, which categories are holding you back, and how the score compares to other brands in your industry.

If the score comes back at 7 or above, you are in good shape relative to most of the open web. If it comes back at 6 or below, which is where the great majority of brand websites land, you have measurable, fixable structural work to do. Our Fix-It program is built for that conversation.
