When people hear that AI engines weigh 'authority,' they picture press mentions, Wikipedia pages, viral Reddit threads - the famous-company stuff. So we measured it, across millions of US businesses, using our own crawling and analysis. The honest picture: most businesses have almost none of that. And it mostly doesn't sink them.

Only about 28% of businesses have any news coverage at all. Roughly a quarter show up in community discussion. And only about 12% are recognized entities in the knowledge graphs AI leans on. If authority meant fame, 9 in 10 businesses would be invisible.
Flip it over: about 96% of businesses have measurable backlinks, and over 90% carry real domain trust - authority earned through an established domain and the ordinary web citations any working business accumulates: directories, suppliers, local organizations, industry lists.
The takeaway hiding in that gap: the signals almost nobody has are the ones you mostly can't buy - and the signals almost everybody has are the ones you can actually build. AI visibility for a normal business is won in the buildable tier.
First, don't burn months chasing press before the basics are right. A clean, machine-readable site plus ordinary earned links beats a single news hit sitting on top of an unreadable site. Second, the buildable signals compound: every directory listing, every partner link, every industry mention is a small vote that stacks. Third, if you DO have the rare signals - real coverage, a knowledge-graph entry - you're in a small minority, and the data says that advantage is worth protecting and feeding.
These are population-level measurements from our own crawling and analysis, and every category has its own shape - restaurants live on community chatter, B2B software leans on comparison sites. Being read is step one; being referenced is the rest. But the distribution itself is stable and worth internalizing: the authority game most businesses can win is not the one they think they're losing.
