The Six Off-Page Signals AI Reads About Your Business

Most AEO advice stops at your own website: add schema, fix your headings, open your robots.txt. That is real, and it is the ticket in - an engine cannot name a site it cannot read. But between two sites AI reads equally well, the one it names is the one the web already vouches for. That half of the score lives off your site, and we just put all six of those signals next to the on-page ones on every brand page. Here is what each is, and how to build it.

Engagemii off-page authority scorecard: the six off-page signals AI reads about a business - backlinks, domain trust, entity presence, news mentions, community discussion, and Reddit - shown as a six-card grid alongside on-page signals.

1. Backlinks: who points at you

Every link to your site is a vote another site is willing to be seen casting. AI reads those votes as evidence you are real and worth naming. Every business already has at least one - our own directory links to you - and the way to earn more is unglamorous and reliable: get listed in the directories and review platforms your industry actually uses, and earn links from partners, suppliers, and the press that covers your field.

2. Domain trust: the weight your address carries

A domain earns trust over time - through age, a clean history, and consistent use. The single biggest mistake here is churning domains or splitting your presence across several. Pick one canonical home, keep it, and let it accumulate weight. Trust you have been building for years is not something a competitor can buy overnight.

3. Entity presence: whether AI knows you exist at all

Before an engine can prefer you, it has to resolve you to a single, known thing - a business with one name, one identity, one set of facts. Brands that show up consistently in the reference layers AI leans on get recognized; brands with three spellings of their name across the web get skipped. Keep your name, address, and core facts identical everywhere they appear.

4. News and press: who is willing to cover you

Third-party coverage is authority you cannot write about yourself. A handful of genuine mentions in the trade press or local news tells an engine that people outside your own marketing think you matter. You do not need a headline in a national paper - you need to be quotable, reachable, and useful to the reporters and newsletters already covering your corner of the market.

5. Community: where real people discuss businesses like yours

Forums, Q&A sites, and community threads are where buyers talk before they buy, and AI reads those rooms while forming an answer. Being genuinely present and genuinely helpful there is worth more than any ad. The one rule: it has to be real. Manufactured chatter is exactly what these engines are getting better at discounting.

6. Reddit: the internet's opinion, in the open

Reddit gets its own line because AI engines lean on it heavily - it is one of the largest sources of candid, human, comparison-shopping discussion on the web. If your category has an active subreddit and your name never comes up in it, that absence is itself a signal. Show up honestly, answer real questions, and let the mentions accumulate on their own.

The pattern underneath all six

None of these require you to be famous, and none of them are pay-to-win. They are the web slowly deciding you are real - links, trust, recognition, coverage, discussion. On-page structure gets an engine to read you. Off-page authority gives it a reason to name you over everyone else it read. Most businesses pour everything into the first and ignore the second, which is exactly why the second is where the opportunity is.

The honest limits

These six are what the broader web tells AI about you, measured from our own crawling and analysis, and the weight each carries varies with your category and how the engines evolve. Being read is step one; being referenced is the rest, and no single signal guarantees it. What is stable is the direction: the businesses AI names are the ones the web already talks about, and every one of these is something you can build on purpose.
